YouTube rolls out its redesign including more discovery

YouTube has rolled out a redesign of its mobile app and desktop website, with better discovery features part of the mix.

The app now shows a row of ‘suggested videos’ while people are watching in full-screen mode, with plans on “transforming the area below the player so you can browse videos in totally new ways” to further boost discovery. That’s good on one level – keeping people watching more videos for longer – although critics of YouTube’s safe-harbour protection will be sure to point to these kinds of features as proof that YouTube is more than just a ‘passive, neutral’ intermediary.

Anyway, other aspects of the mobile redesign include more white space; tap and swipe gestures to skip back and forwards (and ultimately to jump between videos); the ability to slow down or speed up videos; and an adaptive player to match the video being watched – even if it’s shot in vertical mode. Meanwhile, the desktop redesign also aims to make YouTube cleaner and simpler to navigate around, while YouTube’s logo is also getting a tweak – expect even more focus on the red play button.
