Amazon brings Alexa voice assistant into its Amazon Music app

Amazon's Alexa voice assistant has been making its way into a growing number of devices, but now it's also spreading its wings internally.

From now, Alexa will be integrated into the Amazon Music app for iOS and Android in a few countries: the US, UK, Germany and Austria. The feature, accessed via a 'push-to-talk' function, means Amazon's music-streaming users will be able to use voice commands without an Echo speaker in sight.

Amazon showed its exploration of how people might want to control streaming services with their voices, like: 'Play the new song by Fifth Harmony'; 'Play music for a road trip'; 'Play Coldplay from the 2000s'; 'Play classic rock for cardio'; and 'Play the song that goes Banging on the ceiling, banging on the ceiling, keep it down' (Foo Fighters, since you ask).

It's these interactions that are the most interesting thing about Alexa's integration with music: in some cases, Amazon is pulling together its own metadata to drive them, while in other cases it relies on the metadata provided by labels.
