Leonard Cohen celebrated with covers on Vimeo

Leonard Cohen's new album, "Old ideas", just came out and Columbia Records is promoting it with a really special initiative.

The record label is curating a series of videos - posted on the online video platform Vimeo - called "Old Ideas With New Friends": the videos showcase contemporary artists covering their favourite Cohen songs.

The first clip that has been posted is a touching rendition of 1988's song "Everybody Knows" performed by Cults; Cults slow it down, strip out the synth line and introduce a drum beat, shimmering guitars and a sense of impending disaster.

The second video posted by Columbia is a performance by Afghan Whigs and Twilight Singers iconic leader Greg Dulli, who reinterprets "Paper Thin Hotel"; then there's a Cold War Kids cover of "There Is a War".

Covers from Bradford Cox and the New Pornographers' A.C. Newman are forthcoming.
