Digital album sales rose over 43% in 2011

The world music industry can take a deep breath: number of albums sold digitally in 2011 rose by over 43%, generating over £117 million for the UK music industry. Good numbers, that testify that the industry has a future.

Album sales on iTunes, Amazon and co. had totalled £82 million for the whole of 2010, but shot up by over £35 million in 2011, according to new figures published today (February 16) by the BPI. Overall the British Phonographic Industry reckons that UK record companies realised revenue of £795.4m. Digital sales are now a third of that, up from 27.4 per cent in 2010.

Sales of digital singles were also up by 11%, meaning labels raked in £120 million in 2011, compared to £108 million in 2010. Do we take to thank someone for this? Adele? The Foo Fighters? Katy Perry? Maybe.

To comment the good news, BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor has stated. "It is highly encouraging for the long-term prospects of the industry that the pace of digital growth continues to accelerate. British labels are supporting a wide range of innovative music services and music fans are embracing digital like never before".
