MC5: r.i.p. Michael Davis

MC5 bass player Michael Davis, died of liver failure at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, California, on Friday following a month of treatment for liver disease.

Born on June 5, 1943, the bassist gained attention in the revolutionary Detroit band MC5 and from 2004 played in a version of the group called DKT-MC5 with former MC5 members Wayne Kramer on guitar and Dennis Thompson on drums.
The MC5 lasted from from 1964 to 1972, making waves with incendiary anti-establishment lyrics and a blistering early-punk sound, starting with their first album "Kick Out the Jams," released in 1969.
After the MC5 he served time with a number of bands, including Ascension with Fred Smith, Destroy All Monsters with Ron Asheton from the Stooges, the LA-based Empty Set, and in the 1990s Rich Hopkins & The Luminarios.

A few years ago Davis also co-founded the non-profit Music is Revolution Foundation, which supports music education in public schools.

He is survived by his wife, Angela Davis, as well as three sons and a daughter.
