Deezer: 3m paying users and a new free service in more than 150 countries

Deezer, the French web-based music streaming service on subscription, announced the passing of the 3 million paying users mark and between Thursday and Wednesday is launching new features and a free, ad-supported version of its service in more than 150 countries.
The company - partly owned by Russian-born billionaire Len Blavatnik's Access Industries - is trying to put pressure on its peers (in particular Spotify, the leader in this field) and has kicked off a plan offering users two hours of free streaming music per month on desktop computers and laptops - while regular paying subscribers benefit from 60 hours per month of listening.

Deezer's CEO Axel Dauchez explained the launch of this free service is "one of the most important investments in the company" and it'll help expanding Deezer's reach. The company estimates the free service has a potential audience of 600 million people.
"Our ad-supported service is a necessary trigger to drive global change by bringing music subscription to mass audiences worldwide" he added. "Our aim here is to encourage music fans to try us, driving ad-supported service listeners to switch to paid subscription over time. Once they have properly experienced Deezer, people do not go back".

The free service, along with some new features, is the result of the $130 million Deezer got in October from Access Industries and other investors: the funding has put the company in a growth trajectory.

One of the new key features is called Deezer4Artists: it's a service offering artists certified accounts, the ability to customize their presence on Deezer, analyse listening activity and upload additional content (demos, samples, live songs and interviews). The artists will be able to choose who has access to this extra content - listeners in a particular country, for example, or only paying subscribers. Artists will also be paid royalties on extra content.
Deezer4Artists program also features an open application initiative: Deezer will support artists to develop software that utilizes the service's open API and create new fan experiences.
