MidemLab 2013: the winners
Today the winners of the MidemLab competition for start-ups and mobile developers were announced in Cannes. Previous winners included Soundcloud, Songkick and Next Big Sound, which have all gone on to become established businesses. The 30 companies were competing across three separate categories

The first category was “Music Discovery, Recommendation and Creation” and the winner was Songful by InstruMagic. Songful is an iPad app that allows anyone to be come a guitarist. Users can search for tracks, select them and start strumming away on their virtual iPad guitar without the fear of ever hitting a wrong note. The company is working with a number of publishers to have as extensive and legal a database as possible.

In the second category, “Marketing and Social Engagement”, Jamplify came out on top. The company provides artists with a tool to leverage existing fans and reward them for spreading the word about them. Each fan is given a unique link to the artist's chosen landing page and is awarded points each time someone clicks on it. The points translate into rewards, which could be anything from bonus material to a meet and greet.

For the third category, “Direct-To-Consumer Sales and Content Monetisation”, StageIt was crowned the winner. The company provides fans paid access to exclusive performances by an artist, whether from home, a rehearsal room or directly from the recording studio. Fans can pay upfront to access the concerts but they can also tip the artist during the performance and the company revealed that 59% of the artists' revenues came from tips.

Finally there was a special prize from from Fleur Pellerin (French Minister for Minister for SMEs, Innovation and the Digital Economy). The prize was called “Coup de Coeur” and it was awarded to Audience.fm.
