Alternative Rock, an overview of today's scene

Alternative Rock these days is often dominated by established acts including The Mars Volta, Manic Street Preachers, The Flaming Lips and Phoenix.

Even though Alt Rock is often called Indie Rock or simply Rock these days and it’s easy to get caught up in the established names there are still plenty of new bands coming through in the genre that are well worth mentioning. These include Atlas Genius, Imagine Dragons and Silversun Pickups.

Imagine Dragons of course the biggest story for the genre having had the biggest rock track in 2013 in the US with “Radioactive”, which was ubiquitous on radio.

Phonenix with their latest release “Bankrupt!” - released in 2013 - have had their biggest hit to date. The album peaked at N.4 on the US Charts and catapulting the band to headline or near-headline spots in festivals all over the globe.

And although it is heavily linked with The Mars Volta since they were founded by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - the Bosnian Rainbows have hit a high note in 2013 with their self-titled debut album which was very well received with positive reviews from the likes of the NME, Kerrang! and Consequence of Sound.

Atlas Genius, also on their debut album with 2013’s release “When It Was Now”, have not reached mainstream popularity with the album peaking at N.34 but are certainly on the ascent. Alt Rock may have become an unfashionable word, but it’s still very much present it today’s charts.
