Google Play launches in Canada
Canada’s music streaming space is starting to heat up as a Google Play Music has entered the market this week.
Google launches its music subscription service in what is still a relatively open market compared to the US, since only Rdio and Deezer currently operate in Canada.
As with its US launch, Google is offering a discount to early adopters allowing them to subscribe for $7.99 if they sign up before the 30th of June, after that the price goes up to the usual $9.99.
The Canadian market hasn’t adopted streaming en-masse yet, and this is demonstrated by the fact that digital music sales were still up in 2013, with digital album sales growing 9% and digital track sales up 2%.
The high royalties demanded by Canadian collection societies are currently seen as the reason why services like Spotify and Pandora have not launched in the country yet.
