Epidemic Sound closes a $5m round to develop its music licensing model

Epidemic Sound, the Swedish startup that has built al substantial business by working outside of the traditional licensing models to provide cost-effective music for broadcasters and film-makers, has raised $5m in funding backed by the VC firm Creandum.

Epidemic Sound already has deals with a number major national broadcasters and is now partnering with online players including multi-channel networks to provide their creators with cost-effective and legal background music to their videos.

The company buys tracks outright from composers - paying them a flat fee - and since the company’s composers are not affiliated with a collection society after the initial purchase there is no additional cost.

The funds will enable the company to expand its portfolio of composers and also to get staff on the ground in some of its most active territories.

The podcast Digital Music Trends interviewed the co-founder of the company Oscar Hoglund just a few weeks ago, below is a video of the interview if you’d like to know more about the company.
