ERA analysis: Vinyl-album sales to top 1 million in UK

The total number of vinyl albums to be sold in the UK in 2014 will almost likely exceed the one-million mark, more than four times the level of 2008.

That milestone for the traditional physical recorded-music format comes as the trade body Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) notes that UK sales for the black-plastic disc albums have already exceeded the total achieved in the whole of 2013.

The ERA analysis concludes that year-to-date sales of vinyl albums now total 844,122 units; by comparison, 829,243 were sold in the whole of 2013.

“With three months of the year still left to run, that means total 2014 vinyl sales will almost certainly exceed one million,” ERA says in a statement.

But, before vinyl fans get too carried away, the 844,122 vinyl albums sold this year amount to less than 3% of the total physical-albums market with the CD format still accounting for a massive 97%.
