UK’s anti-piracy police unit gets extended funding to 2017

The UK government’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has increased the funding for the City of London Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU), which was scheduled to end next year, by an extra £3 million.

The extended financing means PIPCU, which includes a representative from the UK music-industry trade body BPI, will continue its anti-piracy battles from 2015 to 2017.

The organisation says its achievements since launching in 2013 include suspending more than 2,350 illegal and suspicious domain names, and investigating crimes that caused £29 million of damage to copyrighted goods.

It has also created an Infringing Website List aimed at warning advertisers about which rogue websites to avoid.
