Google Play Music releases improved iOS app that works natively on the iPad

Google Play Music has released an update its iOS app that introduces a design refresh (based on the Material Design user interface), a few new features and - finally - allows the app to work natively on the iPad.

This means that both iPhone and iOS users will now have access to a very similar suite of functions as are available to Android users.

This is interesting because it goes to show once again that Google is not afraid of reaching out to iOS users and potentially steer them towards trying out an Android phone at some point.

The difference between the Google-built app and normal iOS apps is going to be particularly striking from now given Google’s implementation of Material Design UI in its latest iteration.

On the other hand, it is not a given that Apple will make a version of its re-vamped “Beats Music” service available on Android systems. If it did, it could be a watershed moment similar to when Apple decided to release iTunes for Windows systems in order to attract a wider base for the iPod.

The other additions to the Google Play Music app for iOS include new artist and album pages with descriptions, and immersive Now Playing experience and other visual improvements. The company has also enhanced the streaming and automatic caching functions to make the playback experience more reliable.

Google Play Music service is now closely associated with the YouTube Music Key subscription, which allows users to access millions of videos ad-free.
