UMG's President of Global Digital Business Rob Wells to exit

Rob Wells, Universal Music Group’s President of Global Digital Business is leaving his post after 15 years with the company, Billboard reports

Wells moved to LA with UMG’s CEO Lucien Grainge in 2010 and played a key role in the running of the largest label in the world. In 2013 he was called to serve on UMG’s executive board. At the time Grainge stated: “Rob Wells has been instrumental to our success in finding innovative and effective platforms and digital partners to help our artists succeed. His promotion to the UMG executive board reflects not only the strength of his performance and his contributions to the company, but also the critical priority we place and significant opportunities we see for our digital business.”

According to Billboard, it is likely that Wells won’t be replaced directly. This could be a reflection of the fact that digital is no longer an “aside” but a core part of the business.

There has been no announcement from Wells himself as to where he may be heading or the reason for the departure. If Wells agreed to leave UMG for another gig, that is likely to be something major such as becoming the head of a label or, a key role at a music streaming service or - who knows - even a job at a certain company named after a fruit.
