Sony Music acquiring the remainder of The Orchard from Dimensional Associates

Sony Music acquiring the remainder of The Orchard from Dimensional Associates

A Sony Corporation filing with the SEC (US Securities & Exchange Commission) for the quarter ending on December 31st revealed that the company is in the process or acquiring the remainder of The Orchard from Dimensional Associates for $200m - Billboard reports

Sony Music already owns - according to reports - a majority stake in the Orchard which was acquired in 2012.

The deal is currently awaiting approval from regulatory bodies and that may happen as soon as the end of March.

This is an interesting investment from Sony, given the emails unveiled by last year’s pervasive hack where the company’s executives selling off its publishing division. Although Sony Music is doing well, Sony as a whole is is a tight spot and so a $200m investment indicates that music is still very much on its radar.

It is worth noting that The Orchard today is much more than a music distributor, having developed an important multi channel network as well as a respected film and TV distribution business. The company has made significant investments at festivals such as Sundance, acquiring the right to some of the best-reviewed movies at the festival as this piece on Consequence of Sound outlines. This means that the acquisition could be interesting both for Sony's music and movie divisions.

The question mark is, will Sony leave The Orchard be or is this investment and the completion of its acquisition a sign of bigger/different things to come?
