Gaye’s family on “Blurred Lines”: It’s not over yet

Fresh from a court victory that has shaken up and divided the US music industry, with a jury recognising that the track “Blurred Lines” infringed on the copyright of “Got to give it up” and awarding $7.4 million in damages, Marvin Gaye’s family is keen to push the case further.

The Hollywood Reporter states that the family is now asking the judge to add Universal Music, Interscope and Star Track Entertainment to the list of infringers, thus amending the jury’s verdict from last week.

The rationale is that there is no separation between those who created the infringing work and those who created it, manufactured it and distributed it - at least according to the family’s attorney Richard Busch.

The attorney is also pushing for the judge to set aside the jury’s decision not to hold T.I. accountable.

It is not clear - given that substantial amount already awarded to the family - whether the plan is to ask for the award to be increased or whether this is simply a tactic to strengthen the case when, as it seems probable, the decision is appealed by Robin Thicke and Pharrell.
