Take it from the top: Thicke and Williams seek new "Blurred Lines" trial

The situation around “Blurred Lines” is getting blurrier by the minute as Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams have filed a motion asking for a new trial.

These new proceedings would be entirely separate to the ones that just concluded and that Pharrell and Thicke will also need to appeal.

They believe that the original proceedings were prejudicial to them and that that the instructions given to the jury were confusing and led to an erroneous verdict.

In the original trial the jury ended up awarding $7.4 million to Marvin Gaye’s family. The ruling made headlines all over the world causing a heated debate due to its potential impact on songwriters. Those against the virdict claim that it will have a 'chilling effect' on songwriter's output as everyone will be too afraid to release tracks that even vaguely hint at past hits - something that in pop music is almost inevitable.

On the other hand, Gaye’s family lawyers filed its own motions maintaining that the label that released the track - part of Universal Music - should be also held accountable and that the track should be taken out of circulation until the parties agree to a settlement.

Impossible to tell at the moment who will come out on top, what’s certain is that the lawyers from both parties will be racking up their billable hours.
