MixRadio launches iOS and Android apps, focuses on the discovery of new music

Music streaming service MixRadio announced the launch of iOS and Android apps just six months after the announcement of its acquisition by Line in December 2014.

The service was developed by Nokia and sold off by Microsoft. The software giant already has its own music service and likely didn’t know what to do with MixRadio after it landed in its lap following Nokia’s acquisition.

The app promises to learn users’ tastes and let them discover new music every day, providing a personalised experience by picking tracks from an extensive catalogue spanning over 35 million songs.

MixRadio is free and available in 31 countries. The service has partnered with HTC and will provide updates for the electronic giant’s BlinkFeed feeding users new mixes on a regular basis.

It is going to be particularly interesting to see if and how Line integrates the MixRadio experience within its own product since that is likely to be the best shot the service has at becoming a contender in the internet radio space.

The race towards personalised radio-like experiences has certainly heated up over the last month.

Deezer integrated podcasts into its own service allowing users to create their own radio-like playlists, Spotify is rumoured to be launching a new “Spotify Now” recommendation/playlisting feature, and Apple is apparently hard at work to create the best possible curated experience thanks to an army of music journalists/curators hired for that purpose and possibly thanks to recent hire Zane Lowe.
