Billboard and Shazam unveil charts for most successful music synchs in US ads

Billboard and Clio Music partnered with Shazam to compile charts of the year’s top commercials from a music standpoint (July 2014-June 2015).

The charts take into consideration Shazam’s data as well as sales and streams data from Nielsen on the featured tracks and are divided in three categories: Breakthrough, Collaborative Debut and Classic.

In the Breakthrough category the first position is held by A-Track, Milo & Otis and Rich Kidz for “Out the Speaker”, featured in an advert for Mountain Dew.

In the Collaborative Debut (not-yet-released song or a track specifically commissioned) category “Renegades” by X Ambassadors, featured in an advert for Jeep Renegade, took the top spot.

In the Classic (older song) category Salt-N-Pepa dominated with “Push It”, featured in a Geico commercial.

The synchronisation space is thriving in the US and Europe, with labels, publishers, artists and songwriters being the primary beneficiaries: one well-placed track in an advert or TV show can generate income equivalent to tens of millions of plays on Spotify or Apple Music.
