Bop.fm acquihired by Lifelock, shuts down service

Digital music startup Bop.fm is shutting down its service following the acquisition by Lifelock, a consumer data protection company focused on cases of identity theft.

Bop.fm aimed to solve the conundrum faced by users who want to share a link to their favourite music but who know that not all their friends subscribe to the same service. The startup provided links that would enable a Spotify user to share a track on Twitter and know that if an Rdio user clicked on it, it would resolve on his/her Rdio player instead.

This is a pretty strange acquisition that can only be explained as an acquihire, meaning that Lifelock may have spotted some interesting talent and some transferable technology in Bop.fm that will help it grow its own business.

Bop.fm’s blog states simply:

“Our team will apply our consumer product DNA to help enhance the services that LifeLock delivers to millions of customers – we can’t wait to show you what we have in store.”

The company is emailing users with information on how to export their playlist data from the service.

Bop.fm was interviewed back in 2013 by Digital Music Trends, below an interview with the founder Shehzad Daredia, the company’s co-founder and CEO.
