The Orchard acquires Shrapnel Records' catalogue

Music and video distribution company The Orchard has announced the acquisition of Shrapnel Records’ historic catalogue. The label is credited with being the first focusing on metal in the US.

Launched in 1980, Shrapnel's catalogue spans over 3,000 tracks and includes recordings by the likes of Marty Friedman, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker Tony MacAlpine and Vinnie Moore.

The Orchard will take over the physical and digital distribution of the label’s catalogue, and the deal will prove a boon to fans as a number of the releases are being made available online for the first time.

The deal is limited to the label’s past catalogue - Shrapnel will continue releasing new music independently. Founder Mike Varney stated that he felt that the depth of the label’s catalogue required a larger company to take care of it properly, which is the main reason behind the sale.

Jason Pasca, VP of Catalogue Development and Associate General Counsel at The Orchard, stated: “The Shrapnel Label Group was the first American label dedicated to metal and has pioneered the development of guitar-centric records. To get to work with a catalog of this size and scope is humbling and inspiring, and I couldn’t be happier that The Orchard will now serve as the steward for Shrapnel’s legacy.”
