Spotify acquires two startups: Soundwave and Cord Project

Spotify has acquired two startups that may go a long way towards improving the company’s social component: Soundwave and Cord Project.

Soundwave is an Irish company that may already be familiar with some readers, the company’s app had a big launch in 2013 which included support from Apple which featured it twice, an endorsement from Stephen Fry and great press, which led to the app being downloaded 1.5 million times around the world.

The company’s app, in spite of the great tech and team, had lost some momentum however and was struggling to find its feet, pivoting to develop a B2B product that could help companies improve the social experience on their apps.

Given Spotify’s struggle in that area, Soundwave - both the product and the team - will undoubtedly make a positive contribution over the coming months.

Soundwave wrote on Medium:

"The music industry is changing, and its changing fast. We think now is the perfect time for Soundwave to join forces with Spotify, the #1 music streaming service in the world and the perfect home for us to continue our mission.

Cord Project on the other hand is at its core an audio messaging platform that has been used by over a million people around the world. The company had developed a number of ‘projects’ as well, the most notable being Chhirp, a way of sharing audio to Twitter. The diversity of the projects churned out by the company indicates another extremely competent technical team, and leave us wondering how Spotify may integrate voice messaging, or voice input, as part of its experience.

Cord Project wrote on medium:

“Today we’re excited to announce that we’ll be joining Spotify to form the foundation of a team dedicated to exploring new ways to discover and listen to music. We’ll be leveraging what we’ve learned at Cord Project and Spotify’s amazing analytics, data, and music catalog to reinvent how we engage with audio across a number of platforms.”

Cord Project announced that it will be shutting down its operations over the next few weeks, Soundwave on the other hand has not yet stated whether the app will be retired.
