Spotify maintains growth momentum as it hits 30 million paying subscribers

Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek took to Twitter to announce that the company has now reached 30 million subscribers worldwide.

Ek ‘embedded’ the news in a tweet expressing his excitement over seeing Cuba open up, and implying that Spotify would be interested in expanding there in the future (accommodation 'startup' Airbnb has already made arrangements to start trading in the country).

This represents an increase by 10 million since Spotify’s last announcement on the matter in June 2015, when the company stated it had reached the 20 million subscribers milestone.

A combination of clever business partnerships, Spotify’s brand recognition as one of the ‘first movers’ in music streaming and a continued territorial expansion of the service have ensured that the company could maintain its momentum in spite of new players like Apple Music and (to a smaller extent) Tidal.
