Rhapsody releases new social features via The Listener Network

Rhapsody (known as Napster outside of the US) may not be the most talked-about music streaming service in the world, with Apple Music, Spotify and Tidal grabbing the biggest share of headlines. However, the service does have a large loyal fanbase and is continuing to develop interesting new features.

The latest, launched this week, is The Listener Network, which seeks to tap into the service’s user base by connecting Rhapsody and Napster subscribers around the world and forming communities around them.

Users of the service can now add a bunch of information to their profiles, including a photo, and take advantage of the Music Match feature that helps users discover new music via users with similar music tastes.

The musical match-making exercise mimics some of the dating apps out there by assigning two users a “compatibility” percentage. Once you’ve found a match, you can go and look at the other person's listening history. In addition, Rhapsody immediately goes ahead and creates a playlist based on your shared musical interests. All of this is powered by Rhapsody’s Music Intelligence Engine.

If the matchmaking features sound a little creepy, users should rest assured that as of yet there is no way for users to message directly on Rhapsody (this could have opened a huge can of worms).

Alongside Music Match, Rhapsody has also introduced a new Trending Today playlist that changes on a daily basis depending on what’s hot on the service and on the activity of the people you follow.

Rhapsody may not be the coolest service on the block, but it is certainly working hard to keep its users happy and get them to bring their friends along.
